What a moment...

On more days than not, Desan and Gundu Rao saar have done more to keep IIMB running than the faculty themselves.. and now that I look back, I do think our mess was quite rocking. After all, Sarin managed to eat non-veg all meals all 365 days of the year without fail :)

Have you met someone who is reasonably tall, fair, with a reasonable build (sometimes frail, but never well-built), a tikka on the forehead, and a self-righteous expression on their faces in your college premises? If you still haven't placed this species called Tambrahmo Sapien, I will describe further characteristics of this species.

The members of this species perform well academically, are generally religious, are sought after for their views, have an opinion on most things under the sun while simultaneously being non-judgmental, and frequently wear an "I have not been given my due by this world" expression on their faces. They are also consciously self-effacing (aka painfully modest) about their achievements (generally academic)

The members of this species have a strong desire to be with fellow species' members though they are socially 'accepted' in other groups as well. When 2 Tam Brahms meet, they discuss a third, when 3 meet they discuss other species' members, when more than 3 meet, they discuss topics like 'Changes in socio-cultural patterns of urban India fuelling prosperity in rural India' or 'the inherent fallacies in the parliamentary democracy system' with their collective decibel levels of discussion varying in direct proportion to the proximity of non-tam-Brahms, especially those possessing XY chromosome. A lone tambrahm has this brooding intellectual look about him giving an impression that he is trying to mentally divide 233 by 17 while he is actually benchmarking himself vis-à-vis other tambrahms and later on with other homo sapiens as well. This is a favorite pastime of the Tam Brahms.

They are fiercely competitive but are repulsed by the notion of relative benchmarking and frequently proclaim (with a sigh of relief) that they are glad that they didn't get sucked into this rat race. That the tam-brahm knows the re-evaluated score in the second cycle test of the little known character with whom he has spoken to exactly twice before in his life is pure coincidence.

When tambrahms are locked in conversation, they laugh at jokes like 'Even if you win the rat race you are still a rat' and 'statistics are like Bikini, they show a lot but not what you want to see' but only so much a smile politely at sardar jokes or gujju accent jokes. Not that they mean ill to surds or gujjus, it is just that they have a far more refined taste than that.

They also revel in the knowledge of their own refined taste in art or literary forms and consciously move towards 'better' books rather than wasting time in mundane 'pulp' fiction. They are wont to make statements like 'yeah, I used to read Sidney Sheldon when I was in class IX and X. I don't know why but I used to like them a lot. Sheldon is pure pulp. You read 3 and you can write the 4th. Now, I am glad that I have graduated to Ayn Rand, PG Wodehouse and The Economist'. All this to a poor soul who has just told him that he liked a Sheldon novel that he had read the previous night. After a pause, the tambrahm follows his speech up with "yeah, I read that book and liked it too. Typical, but ok. If you are a Sheldon fan, it's a great book". The well-kept secret of Tam Brahms is the fact the Tam brahm himself struggled his way through 985 pages of 'Atlas Shrugged' precisely for deriving the satisfaction of making the above statements.

Now, where is the catch? What is it that this species lacks? They are academically good (some are 'gifted'), socially accepted everywhere, well-sought after for their views on everything, adored by even the girls, are considered smart and sincere, are on the right side of ethics and teacher's favorites.

Wait a second; God isn't all that kind to anybody. These guys have their share of problems too. In most cases, they are too good for themselves. When it comes to academics, their parochial attitude keeps them on the edge; in sports, upbringing and dietary constraints kill them; in social life, their pseudo-intellectualism does them in, but their biggest problem lies with their performance with girls. They generally get slotted into 'Oh, he is a deeeeeaaaar friend' or 'I can always count on him for a chat after I have had a tough day with my boyfriend(s)', or in really rare and sad cases 'If only I had met him earlier'.

There is also a bunch of lads who slot into the between n and n+1 category, but more on that later.

Just read that Mr. Chaudhuri has cracked the Brand Equity Quiz 2009, and as the newspapers are saying - by a big margin! :) Congratulations!!!!!! This is awesome....

It was clear from the start that the Delhi team was the force to reckon with. It looked like there was nothing that Rohan Khanna and Sandeepan Chaudhuri from Accenture Delhi didn't know of, and what they didn't know, they worked out very intelligently.

Greetings from IIMB!

First: Oreintation week for incoming batch of 2009

As part of the orientation week for the incoming batch of 2009 we have a panel discussion scheduled on 28th of June (saturday, Morning) on "Choice of career and career development". The panel discussion is expected to have anywhere between 3 to 10 year senior alumni of IIMB.

The incoming batch, though a mix of people with prior experience and freshers shall immensly benefit if you could spare some time to share your experience and thought process in decision making towards your career. The discussion shall revolve around how best a student can utilise his time on campus towards taking the right decisions in chosing the right path.

The interactive session is expected to last for an hour and a half at the maximum. We shall be obliged if you could forward your details and travel plans so that necessary arrangements can be made in advance.

Second: Ten year alumni re-union at IIMB

We had the '97 batch alumni re-union last year at IIMB during second week of June 2007.

This year we can schedule the re-union on 21st or 28th of June as per convenience of the alumni.

Kindly send in your suggestions on the same and also the confirmation of your participation.

Third: Seminar on Leadership at IIMB on 15th of August

We intend to hold a seminar on leadership on 15th of August at IIMB. For this we shall be inviting alumni of IIMB who are country head or business heads or enterprenuers or social activists- essentially leaders in their respective choice of careers. On the same day perhaps we could have the re-union of '94 batch alumni as well. We are still in the process of giving shape to the event so kindly offer your suggestions on whom we could invite, his/her contact details. extent and scope of the seminar.

An event of such a magnitude would require large scale sponsorhips so please provide us with contact details of people whom we could approach for sponsorship either within our alumni network or outside.

JM Financial Ltd has informed BSE that the Board of Directors of the Company at its meeting held on February 22, 2007, has approved in principal decision to separate from Morgan Stanley in the joint venture in Investment Banking and Securities Broking Business, subject to necessary regulatory and other approvals as may be required and signing of definitive agreements.

The joint venture inked in 1997 and formalized in 1999 established a pre-eminent Investment Bank, Equity Broking, Research, wealth management and advisory and securities distribution operations in India during the decade long relationship.

JM Financial Group, established in 1973 and a pre-eminent Indian Investment Bank by itself prior to the joint venture with Morgan Stanley, will acquire 49% holding of Morgan Stanley in JM Morgan Stanley Pvt Ltd (JMMS), the Investment Banking Company together with its subsidiaries engaged in fixed income, equity broking, wealth management, advisory and distribution businesses of the joint venture at around book value for USD 20 mn equivalent to Rs 88.5 cr at current exchange rate. JM Financial will simultaneously sell to Morgan Stanley, their 49% holding in JM Morgan Stanley Securities Pvt Ltd (JMSPL), the Institutional equity broking Company for USD 445 mn equivalent to approx Rs 1970 Cr at current exchange rate.

The transaction is expected to close by first quarter of Financial Year 2007-08. JM financial group and Morgan Stanley have agreed that all existing mandated transactions will be executed by the current joint venture and the partners in the manner currently in practice in a seamless manner keeping the clients' interest as utmost priority.

JM Financial Group has recently ramped up their asset management business with the addition of a private equity fund and a real estate fund to the existing mutual fund business. The group has also forayed into securitized assets and special situations investing activities. Besides these, the group runs a Non Banking Financial Company and a Commodities research and broking business.

Global asset managers, despite overall positive trends in the value of the funds they manage, must take forceful initiatives to improve the integrity of their businesses if they hope to remain competitive as industry dynamics shift in step with demographic patterns, according to a new report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The new report 'Playing the Long Game: Global Asset Management 2006' examines the current state of the industry, offers a detailed analysis of the market for retirement assets, and outlines specific actions that asset managers can take if they seek both to raise profitability and achieve a leadership position in the industry. The global management-consulting firm estimates the current managed assets in India to be about US$170bn and predicts this to grow exponentially to about US$1.3 trillion by 2015. This includes the major elements - domestic mutual funds, international funds invested in India, private banking including PMS, unit linked insurance and pension funds. BCG believes this opportunity will grow exponentially. In fact, managed assets excluding pensions are expected to grow by about 10 times over the next decade, says Alpesh Shah "The potential of the Indian market is attracting many new entrants and this is likely to continue over the next five years," he said. In order for the Indian asset managers to do well, BCG has identified the five commandments for success, which are: 1. to reach out to the full India potential by going beyond the top eight cities 2. development of the international opportunity 3. new product innovation to fill out the key category gaps and address adjacent spaces 4. to optimise distribution including developing alternate channels 5. to build a global brand "India is a very attractive opportunity and ultimately," says Shah. "The players that get their act together on these five commandments in addition to the table stakes of solid investment performance will be the biggest winners." According to the BCG report, which is based on a study of 28 national markets, the value of professionally managed assets - those for which a management fee is paid - grew by around 15% globally to US$49.1 trillion in 2005, with capital inflows driven largely by growth in Europe and Asia. Assets Under Management (AUM) in both Europe and the Asia-Pacific region grew by more than 20% in nominal terms, compared with 9% in the United States. The US market nonetheless remains the largest in the world, with more than US$22 trillion in AUM. BCG says that asset managers, in order to improve the integrity of their overall businesses, must optimize distribution networks, enhance segment and asset-class expertise, explore the development of innovative products, foster investment-manager autonomy, enhance scale, and continue to hammer away at cutting costs. A highly disciplined approach to distribution will be particularly critical because the bulk of power and influence in the industry is continuing to shift away from manufacturers toward distributors and intermediaries that control customer relationships, according to the consulting firm. In order to improve competitiveness specifically in the market for retirement assets, players need to redefine their product portfolios, broaden advisory capacity, invest more in the customer experience, sharpen risk-management capabilities, and vigilantly keep up with regulatory shifts, says the report. The report notes that traditional core businesses of actively managed equity, bond, and money market funds are coming under increasing pressure, says the report. Although revenue margins have showed relative stability since 2004 - at around 45 to 50 basis points for equity funds and 15 to 20 basis points for bond and money market funds - asset growth across the core is expected to stay in the middle single digits over the next few years, it adds. By contrast, asset growth should be stronger in non-core offerings. These include commoditised products such as index funds and exchange-traded funds, as well as alternative investments such as hedge funds and private equity. Hedge funds assets, which generate revenues in the 150-to-200 basis-point range, already exceed US$1 trillion and are expected to grow by 15% annually as declining minimum-investment requirements bring hedge funds more into the asset management mainstream, the report says.

During placements, I happened to chance upon an Alumni Committee member. Who asked me for my email id, so that I can register for Anusmaran'2006 (How many times will alumni committee ask us for our email ids?). They also wanted feedback on how to make Anusmaran better. Which I liberally gave.

"Anusmaran last year was amongst the worst that I attended."
"Why?" (obviously, she didn't know and also, she didn't really have any ownership for the previous year)
"Because the music wasn't there, the alcohol ran out, the food wasn't good and finished way too soon, there was no dance floor and the party ended at 11:00."
"Okay."
"You know, we really don't care where it is - a hall will do just as fine as a hotel, but the party better be well-stocked."
"Yes, I know, Delhi people complained last year. In any case, they want dance floor."
"No, as far as I know, most people would love good music. And last year, there were complaints from Mumbai, Bangalore, Singapore and Delhi. I didn't check with anyone else."

Well, I tried to make my point. But who knows whether it registered. Hopefully, others have sent in their feedback too. Surely, things can't go worse than last year.
